METHODS FOR REMOVING GUM FROM CONCRETE

The best methods for removing chewing gum from concrete usually depends on how long the gum has been stuck there and level of penetration into the concrete surface. If the gum was left recently and it hasn’t penetrated the surface yet, we are sometimes able to remove it by covering it with ice until the gum freezes, then scraping it off with a metal putty knife.

The ice forces the chewing gum to freeze into a workable consistency compared to a warm and stringy glob. Once the chewing gum is frozen, we slide a metal putty knife or scraper under the gum residue. Then we move the scraper very slowly under the gum and the whole piece should then peel right off of the concrete.

The above process is only possible with brand new gum.

When we remove chewing gum that is already black, or is already smashed down into the concrete, we use a hot water pressure washer with the heat turned up to 200 Degrees in order to melt the chewing gum. For this type of gum removal, we will not use very high pressure because that will sometimes harm the surface of the concrete!

Our pressure washers never uses any more pressure than needed to clean concrete surfaces. These surfaces can be damaged much easier than most people think, especially if they’re only a few years old. Concrete can need up to 100 years to cure completely. That is why we always use hot water and the least amount of pressure possible for our chewing gum removal professional.
